On Friday, the 29th September, the finals of the Primary Schools Cup were held at Market Road Pitches. Organised by the Islington Football Development Partnership (Islington Council, GLL and Arsenal in The Community) and the Health & Wellbeing Team, 8 teams had qualified and played in two groups of four with the top two going through to the semi-finals.
In Group X, St Mary Magdelene would win every game to secure top spot but Montem only edged out St Mary’s on goal difference, scoring 8 with no reply in the final group game but at 6-0, Robert Blair nearly scored on the counter-attack which could have put a different complexion on the game and group.
In Group Y, every game was a tight affair exemplified in the fact that three teams tied for top spot, St Joan of Arc and Drayton edging out Thornhill for their semi-final places.
In the first semi-final, St Mary Magdelene once again won without conceding a goal, beating Drayton Park 1-0 whilst Montem played an astute tactical game to beat St Joan of Arc 1-0, having lost 3-1 to them earlier in the week in the group phase.
In the final, St Mary Magdelene showed some true quality and ran out 4-0 winners, deservedly claiming the trophy, having won every one of their games in the competition without conceding a goal.
“The quality of football played throughout the finals was of a really high standard,” commented Michael MacNeill, Football Development Manager. “Some great moments of skill throughout the week including two goals scored with bicycle kicks”.
28 primary schools took part with a total attendance of 400.
