Community Comes Together for Diabetes Awareness Event at Glass Mill Leisure Centre
A successful diabetes awareness event was held at Glass Mill Leisure Centre on Monday 1st June, bringing together local residents, health professionals, and community organisations for a day of education, support, and engagement. The event was split between talks in the Glass Mill studio and stallholders in the atrium area at Glass Mill Leisure Centre. The event was organised and run by the Lewisham Care Partnership.
The event attracted around 60 guests and featured 10 informative stalls, offering a wide range of advice and services related to diabetes prevention, management, and overall wellbeing. Attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with healthcare providers, local support groups, and fitness specialists, gaining valuable insights into maintaining a healthy lifestyle. One of the stall holders were offering free blood pressure checks to attendees and regular leisure centre users.
A series of guest speakers also lead talks throughout the day, sharing expert knowledge and advice to help people manage their condition. Topics covered included early detection, nutrition, physical activity, and the importance of regular monitoring. The talks were well received, sparking meaningful conversations among attendees and encouraging greater awareness of diabetes and its impact.
Organisers described the event as a positive step towards strengthening community understanding of the condition. “It’s important to create spaces where people can access information, ask questions, and feel supported,” said one organiser. “We’re really pleased with the turnout and engagement we saw today. We will certainly be looking to try and make this event a regular booking at the centre”.
The event highlighted the value of community-led initiatives in promoting public health, particularly around conditions such as diabetes, which continues to affect a growing number of people across the UK.
With strong attendance and positive feedback, organisers hope to build on this success with future events aimed at improving health awareness and supporting individuals living with diabetes.
