Across the UK today, 5.8 million people are unpaid carers, supporting a loved one who is older, disabled, or seriously ill. 2026 marks the 4th year of GLL working in partnership with Carers UK, one of the many great organisations in the social care sector.

GLL who operate Better leisure facilities are a social enterprise that believe customer and communities are at the heart of the decisions we make. As Waltham Forest Council’s leisure provider, we want to be the best partner we can be and help to address health inequalities.

Unfortunately, when you are caring for someone else, you may not have the time to care for yourself. Whilst we cannot create time, we can support Carers UK with the Carers Active Together day on 15th April. A national action day all about promoting movement, wellbeing and the power of community for carers. The initiative aims to highlight the importance of physical activity for carers, with research showing that 67% of carers feel more connected to others when they stay active.

Furthermore, throughout April those receiving Carer’s Allowance can join a Better leisure centres at a discounted rate of £34 per month. This membership includes access to the gym, swimming pool, fitness classes.

GLL Chief Executive Peter Bundey emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting carers, stating, “We recognise the vital role that carers play in their communities and want to help improve their health and well-being through this initiative.”

Carers UK Chief Executive Helen Walker welcomed the partnership, encouraging carers to take advantage of these opportunities to improve their well-being, reduce stress, and connect with others. For more information, visit: www.better.org.uk/join-membership
