For most people fitness is about achieving physical health goals, maybe keeping fit to squeeze into holiday clothes or to put it simply working out because you know its ‘the right thing to do’.

Here at Moss Side Leisure Centre it is about community, support and social integration.  One fitness class is aiming to bring our community together by welcoming people of all ages to meet new people, socialise and achieve goals both physically and mentally.

According to NHS statistics more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.

Here at Moss Side we are aiming to reverse those statistics and help every single person in the community feel welcomed and valued. Our chair based class that currently takes place on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s is currently member’s favourite and instructor Dorretta is taking centre stage with helping our members feel part of our Moss Side Family.

Dorretta has been described by members as ‘deserving of a medal’. Cynthia, a long standing member here at Moss Side said: “Everything the trainer does is the best, she’s understanding and knows how to get us motivated male or female, she deserves a medal.”

Cynthia uses the chair based fitness class to help her move through pain as she lives with fibromyalgia, like many other women she enjoys the company the class gives her. Carol-Ann and Rosalind, who are also long standing members say that the class helps them socialise, meet new people and gives them a sense of achievement.

All participants of the class have praised Dorretta for her continued upbeat energy and encouragement she gives everyone.  Both members and staff recognise Dorrretta for her amazing efforts to create an environment where every one of all ages feels welcomed and safe.

To take part in our feel-good, uplifting fitness class you can book online or talk to a member of our reception team.
