Everyone here at Hatfield Swim Centre would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Derek Beaumont, who sadly passed away after suffering a short illness.

Derek founded the Beaumont Diving Academy all the way back in 1968, which was situated here at Hatfield Swim Centre every week day evening and Sunday mornings. His dedication to the sport of Diving was un-matched.

He progressed throughout his life from a Diving athlete himself, to a judge at numerous championship events, the first of these events coming in 1970. He then progressed even further and became a coach for 9 future Olympians, even coaching one of Team GB’s divers, Lindsey Fraser, at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Russia.

Derek’s accolades include being awarded the 2014 BBC’s Unsung Hero Award for the East region of England, as well as being awarded with the Special Recognition of thanks by the Swim England Diving Leadership Group at the 2020 British Diving Championships.

Derek has played a very important part of so many people’s diving journey and has inspired countless members of the diving community to volunteer and work within the sport. His dedication to the art of diving really is something to be celebrated and looked up to.

Anyone who worked at Hatfield Swim Centre knew that Derek always had a story to tell. And we were keen to listen. Whether it was from his younger diving days with his brother, or later on when he was judging at competitions all over the world. He always told his stories with so much passion and you could tell he was really proud of the stories he was telling. He really did lead an incredible life.

Thank you Derek for everything, not just for the sport of Diving, but for just being you. We miss you already!
