Stanborough Park welcome several groups of regular walkers to the park; one such group, first formed pre pandemic and, once allowed to commence, have continued their regular walking programme at Stanborough, meeting weekly to enjoy the park and socialise whilst exercising. During the Pandemic, the triangular picnic area at the South Lake had become a regular spot used by the group to enjoy a sandwich and each other’s company whenever they were allowed out to exercise.

As well as walking and socialising, the group often volunteer their time to tend for the flower beds at site as well as collecting litter; so when the Stanborough team heard recently of the very sad news that one of the regular walkers had passed away we were only too pleased to support the group in any way we could.

The group identified the seated area that held so many memories for them, as an area that they wished to improve and to place a memorial plaque for Dorothy “Dot” Smith.

The Stanborough Team supported the project by way of the replacement of the seats, and the supply of the paint for the redecoration. The Walking friends put in some hard work and have made an excellent job of improving the area.  The seated picnic area now looks splendid and such a suitable place to put a plaque to remember their friend and the happy times they spent there together. And it’s somewhere other park visitors will enjoy using too.

Once the work was completed the group of friends recently held a moving memorial service for Dorothy, followed by a small social gathering, hosted by the Stanborough Team in the conference room on site.

The Stanborough Team would like to pass on their condolences to the family and friends of Dorothy Smith, and their thanks to the regular walking group for their continued partnership and ongoing support in the care of the site.
