After receiving a Covid vaccination in autumn 2023, one Carterton Leisure Centre member experienced a sudden and severe reaction - paralysis in his right arm with almost no movement.

Already managing several long-term health conditions, including Type II diabetes, neuropathy in both feet, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in his hands and knees, high blood pressure, and emphysema, he knew he needed a form of exercise that was low-impact but effective. Aquatic therapy quickly stood out.

He asked at the leisure centre about joining a suitable programme and, following a recommendation from his doctor, was referred to the Healthwise scheme. Since joining the Aquatics for Health sessions at Carterton Leisure Centre, the impact has been life-changing.

“My arm has improved by around 80%,” he says. “My hands and knees are feeling stronger, and I’ve lost about a stone in weight over the last four months.”

The sessions have not only supported his recovery but inspired a more active approach to daily life - “within reason,” he jokes. He particularly values the weightlessness of the water, which makes movement easier and less painful on the joints.

Just as important has been the camaraderie of the sessions.

“There’s a real sense of community. Everyone is welcoming, and instructor Sam makes every class enjoyable and encouraging.”

Now looking forward to each weekly session, he’s keen to share his experience with others.

“I would 100% recommend this to anyone with similar health conditions. It’s helped me feel more mobile, more confident, and more positive about the future.”

From immobility to progress, his journey is a shining example of how supported, accessible fitness can make all the difference.
