Finding Fitness and Friendship at Windrush Leisure Centre: Lesley’s Story
Lesley joined Windrush Leisure Centre in 2024, inspired by her son’s suggestion that she try a group cycle class. At first, she was drawn by the music and the chance to be active, but what she found went far beyond that.
Being blind, Lesley has often faced challenges in finding sport and physical activity opportunities she can enjoy independently. The group cycle class immediately stood out because it required minimal special equipment and support. While the music initially caught her attention, it was the instructor, Sarah, who truly transformed her experience.
Lesley speaks warmly of Sarah, praising her encouragement and attentiveness. Sarah goes out of her way to help Lesley navigate the class—assisting her with getting on and off the bike safely, guiding her with clear instructions, and making sure she knows what to expect at every step. Unlike other instructors who may leave her unsure of what to do, Sarah ensures clarity and confidence, not just for Lesley but for the entire class. “She doesn’t just encourage me,” Lesley says, “she encourages everyone. She makes you feel like you’re all part of a team.”
Sarah’s care extends to other members as well. For example, she helps Aaron, another participant, distinguish when to turn the dial on his bike by attaching blue and red ribbons to the handles and calling out the colours for him.
Lesley also praises the wider Windrush team, highlighting their welcoming attitude. When she first joined, a staff member guided her to the class, and even now, with her husband available to assist, she feels confident that the centre team would support her whenever needed.
The benefits of the class have been tangible. Lesley has noticed significant improvements in her fitness, particularly when walking uphill. She recalls a holiday where a steep cliff path used to leave her breathless—this year, she navigated it without stopping, crediting the class for her progress.
Among her favourite memories is a shared birthday celebration in class, where Sarah played Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday, everyone clapped along, and cake was shared. It was moments like these that made Lesley feel part of a community, not just a class.
Lesley’s story illustrates the remarkable impact of Sarah, the Group Cycle Basics instructor, and the Windrush Leisure Centre team. Through their dedication, encouragement, and thoughtful approach, they create an environment that is truly accessible, inclusive, and life-changing for members of the community.
