There was a time, when I would look at my children, all strong swimmers, and envy how comfortable they were in the water and wish that I could have a fraction of their confidence, ability and also experience the sheer pleasure that they all have when in the water. For myself, at best this time last year, I could, probably swim half a Length of breast stroke, not a single stroke of the crawl and when I went to the sea I would, never venture out of my depth. And now? Well last Thursday I swam over 200 metres in the sea at Porthpean’ Knowing that for at least ten minutes I would not be able to put my feet down and in the pool, I can now swim a length of crawl However, and most importantly, I now love the time that I spend in the water, whether it is being in the pool or in the sea that surrounds our beautiful Cornish Coast.  The reason for this change within me is simple, as since March I have attended the Swim Doctor Sessions at Polkyth Pool.

I cannot thank enough the Swim Doctor’s Helen and Alys for what they have given to me and what they give to all the others that attend their sessions.  They are both patient, kind, knowledgeable and fun, dealing with a wide range of ability within the group always sensitively.  Both have given up their own time leading us in sea swimming sessions on a Thursday night, something that has made a real contribution to my own improvement and something that has bound the whole group together. I consider finally being able to swim properly as one of the great achievements of my life and that would never have happened without the Swim Doctors help and support.  It seems that, if you have Helen and Alys to guide you, then you too can teach old dogs like me new tricks after all!

Picture included is me about to swim in the Baltic sea in Vaasa, Finland this summer.
