What is Restart a Heart Day?

Restart a Heart Day takes place on and around 16th October each year to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and the importance of learning CPR.

The initiative is led by Resuscitation Council UK, supported by British Heart Foundation, British Red Cross, Royal Lifesaving Society UK, St John Ambulance, the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives, NHS England, Save a Life for Scotland, Save a Life Cymru, and Northern Ireland Ambulance.

Why is it important to learn CPR?

A staggering 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests take place in the home. CPR is a skill for everyone, yet almost half of UK adults (43 per cent) have never learned these techniques. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival from cardiac arrest by 10%. By providing training and awareness opportunities as well as the resources to teach people how to react when someone collapses and stops breathing normally, we can save lives, both now and in the future.

I'm wanting to learn, where do I start?

There are plenty of ways that you can learn, you just need to find which way will work best for you

You can attend face-to-face courses:

St John's Ambulance will be hosting free CPR demonstrations all over the country -https://www.sja.org.uk/restart-a-heart-day

RLSS do face to face courses as well, just search for 'Save a Life - AED' on the website https://rlssuk.tahdah.me/event

You can complete online & interactive learning from a number of certified websites such as:

The British Heart Foundation RevivR:

This free online tool teaches you CPR and how to use a defibrillator in just 15 minutes. All you need is a phone and a cushion to practice on -https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/how-to-do-cpr/learn-cpr-in-15-minutes

Resuscitation Council UK Lifesaver:

With their own interactive films you’ll be thrown into the heart of the action as you make the crucial decisions and learn the essential skills needed to save a life -https://life-saver.org.uk or https://www.resus.org.uk/public-resources/how-we-save-lives/lifesaver-learning

Every minute counts when it comes to saving a life...and your knowledge could make the difference
