About Better and GLL

We run over 250 leisure centres, 120 libraries (including seven prison libraries), plus adventure playgrounds and world-class sports venues such as Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, the Copper Box Arena and the London Aquatics Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – all run under our ‘Better’ brand.

We were founded in 1993 and have grown year-on-year since, making us the largest leisure operator in the UK.

In 2017, our turnover was £274 million, and as we’re a not-for-profit organisation, we invest the money back into our facilities, services and employees. This year, our turnover is expected to reach £296 million.

GLL are a major employer in London, and increasingly throughout the wider UK, committed to giving equal opportunities to all.

The leisure industry is huge in the UK and continues to grow – last year, the industry was estimated to be worth almost £4.7 billion!

As other sectors have struggled in the recession, the fitness industry has grown, and GLL have played a significant part in that.

We also invest heavily in sports development. Our Sports Foundation, working in partnership with Sports Aid, helps young sporting talent achieve their full potential, enabling the athletes, coaches and role models of the future.

We work in partnership with over 55 local councils, public agencies and sporting organisations.

Our leisure facilities enjoy more than 45 million visitors a year with over 868,000 members.

We’re also a charitable social enterprise, which means that we place the community and the environment at the centre of everything we do and are dedicated to developing our staff. We were the first leisure organisation to hold this status.
