On Thursday, 28th September, athletes from across the Royal Borough of Greenwich attended the annual GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) awards celebration at Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre.  The event celebrated the Greenwich-based athletes receiving a GLL Sport Foundation award for 2023.  The guest of honour was Olympian Daryll Neita, an Ambassador for the GSF, who, on the night, took part in a Q&A interview with the host for the evening, GLL's Area Community Sports Manager, Tony Brown.  Twenty-two athletes representing a wide range of sports attended the event.  They enjoyed a post-event photoshoot with Daryll Neita and GLL’s other local GSF ambassadors, GB International Fencer Jonathan Webb and South East Stars Cricketer Phoebe Franklin.

The GLL Sport Foundation is the UK's largest independent athlete support programme.  It is an organisation operated by Charitable Social Enterprise GLL, created in 2008 to support talented athletes across the UK.

Eight-six athletes from across the Royal Borough of Greenwich successfully applied for the GLL Sport Foundation for 2023.  GLL’s team based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich joined in the 15th-anniversary celebrations by holding its celebration event at Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre, showcasing the breadth of local sporting talent and highlighting the significant contributions from GLL, GSF and its partners.  Special guests on the night also included the Mayor of Royal of Greenwich, Dominic Mbang and Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities.

Commenting on the GSF celebration event, GLL’s Partnership Manager for Greenwich, Richard Gallagher, said, ''We were once again delighted to host our annual GSF awards, which celebrates the incredible sporting talent we have across the borough.  We are grateful to all the guests who attended the event, especially Daryll Neita, who took time out of her busy schedule to attend; her presence meant a great deal to the many young athletes in attendance on the night. ‘’

Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said: “It was an honour to celebrate the achievements of our local young athletes at the 15th GLL Sports Foundation Awards.

"There is so much budding sporting talent in Royal Greenwich, and with the support of the GSF, we're committed to ensuring that our young people can reach their full potential and follow in the footsteps of Daryll, Jonathan and Phoebe.

"From the pool at the Waterfront Leisure Centre to the Sutcliffe Park athletics track, our borough is home to world-class sports facilities for residents to enjoy.  And you don't have to be a budding Olympian to get active.  Our leisure centres offer a range of friendly, social classes and activities, with discounted offers throughout the week, and our parks are a great place to get outdoors and boost your physical and mental wellbeing."

Reflecting on the GSF event, Olympian Daryll Neita said, ''I feel so honoured to have attended this fantastic event hosted by GLL and to hear about all the fantastic work they are doing in the community.  I am very grateful to GLL and GLL Sports Foundation for their support over the years.  Seeing and meeting so many young athletes from Greenwich, my home borough, was wonderful.  I wish them nothing but the best in their sporting journeys!''
