We are continuing to work in partnership with Islington Council to restore the swimming pools at Highbury Leisure Centre, following the devastating fire on 25 September last year. Our teams have been pressing ahead with the reinstatement programme.
What’s happened so far?
Since the beginning of the year, and following the re-opening of the gym 10 weeks after the fire, our focus has shifted to the pool hall, as well as the plant room and supporting systems required to operate two busy swimming pools.
The vast majority of our work this year has taken place behind the scenes. We first needed to accurately survey the damage and find out how much of the remaining infrastructure could be reused, how much needed replacing and ensure it is safe for rebuilding work to begin.
What’s happening now?
The latest phase of the project has begun, involving the extensive clearance of the pool hall. This includes draining the pool tanks, clearing debris and removing damaged items, whilst stripping out the existing electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems.
We will also be further securing the site by reinforcing the remaining roof structure, as well as installing a Shrink Wrap system to enclose the structure from the outside elements.
Only when we have completed this phase of works in mid-late October, can our expert teams enter to make a full assessment of the pools, in preparation for the main reinstatement works, due to take place over the course of 2020.
Part of the playground next to the leisure centre will remain cordoned off and will re-open once the works have finished.
Keeping you informed
Reinstating the pool hall at Highbury Leisure Centre has been, and continues to be a complex, long-term process and we will keep customers updated on the progress.
We will be sending you a further update in November, once the current phase of works is complete, and the programme is confirmed for next year’s reinstatement phase.
We would once again like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continued patience.
