Taking steps to improve mental wellbeing can seem daunting and time consuming. Research has been conducted to help identify 5 key simple steps that you can implement in your daily life to help improve your mental wellbeing. This research was conducted by the New Economics Foundation and has been implemented across the world.

These 5 things are

Connect

Connecting with other people and building strong relationships can improve wellbeing by increasing sense of belonging and having the ability to share experiences.

You could try:

  • Playing a board game with your family rather than watching TV
  • Have lunch with a colleague outside of the office

Get Active

Research has shown that being active improves moods, reduces stress levels, improves sleep and can reduce feelings of anxiety. There are lots of small steps you can take to increase your activity

  • Go for a walk at lunchtime
  • Get off the bus a stop earlier to walk a little more

Take Notice

Paying attention to how your feeling and allowing some space in your day and week to do so can help to identify triggers you may have for stress and anxiety.

To help create spaces in your day you could try

  • Take a new route to work
  • Visit a new lunch place

Learn

We are constantly learning new things, but making the effort to try and learn new things is a way of developing and boosting your self- esteem.

You could:

  • Sign up for a new class (for example exercise class, or some art class)
  • Learn a new language

Give

Some research has been conducted and has shown that those who help others and give to their community are more likely to rate their feeling as happy.

There are many ways to give but you could try:

  • Making the round of cups of tea/coffee for your colleagues
