The opening of the new Morden Leisure Centre is fast approaching with the construction of the new centre moving at a rapid pace, the project remains on time and on budget, thanks to the great team at Pellikaan Construction, the lead contractors.

The new state of the art leisure centre will replace Morden Park Pools, which first opened to the public after the Easter Holidays in 1967. Lord Hunt opened the baths on the 2nd May 1967; Lord Hunt in his speech described it as a “wonderfully imaginative project’’.

Morden Leisure Centre will have a brand new 100 station gym, including cardiovascular equipment, weights machines and free weights area, as well as space for stretching & relaxation. There will also be a new bright fitness studio where various classes for all levels & abilities. The fitness pool will be 25 meters long & 6 lanes wide with the smaller secondary pool being 15X12 meters complete with a movable floor, to enable various aquatic activities to take place.

The centre will also be able to facilitate diving, with 3 & 5 meter platforms being built a long with spring boards. Customers will also be able to enjoy the ‘‘Better Coffee Corner” relaxing with friends and family while enjoying hot or cold drinks and snacks.

Commenting on the project and it’s progress, Pellikaan’s Project Manager, Andrew Laslett said:

“Pellikaan Construction Limited is extremely excited to be constructing the new Morden Leisure Centre and I am personally proud to be the Project Manager that will bring all of this together on the ground. Already, after only a few weeks in, we have established a secure and safe site for the construction process to take place. Thanks to a favourable summer to date, works are on programme and the foundations of the new centre are well and truly in place with some 500+ piles being installed. The main 25 metre pool is also formed, with casting due imminently”

GLL’s Partnership Manager for Merton, David Hughes said:

‘‘There is a real excitement building amongst centre staff and the local community in anticipation of the arrival of the new state of the art Morden Leisure Centre. The new facility will really compliment the other centres available to residents in the borough already and will really rival other leisure facilities out there in terms of what will be on offer to our customers. The centre will retain it’s diving provision, boast a much larger gym facility and will also provide a café to serve centre customers and users of the surrounding park’’.
