Inspired by the recent Channel 4 programme, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, staff at Sutton Day Nursery took a group of seven 4-year-olds to visit some older adults at Grange Cottage Residential Home. The TV programme followed the lead of similar schemes  across North America that brings together either end of the age spectrum where interaction and a timetable of activities has proven to increase mental agility, strength and reduce levels of depression and isolation in residents of homes.

The children participated in colouring in with the older adults along with playing fun games using a colourful parachute and the visit was so successful they plan to incorporate one visit a month into their schedule.

Kelly Walton, Nursery Manager said of the visit, “A mum of one our team works at the home and we approached them following the programme to see if we could arrange a visit. It was great to see the older adults and children interact and despite the age gap they still seemed to have plenty to talk about. They especially enjoyed the parachute games and were able to keep the drawings produced by the children – they can’t wait to go back!”
