RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 1 - Start Sailing

An introduction to the sport, covering the minimum knowledge required to get afloat under supervision.

This Course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have the basic understanding of Dhingy-handling techniques and background knowledge. It is recommended that all participants consolidate this short introduction with the Basic Skills and Better Sailing Courses.

The duration of the course is 16 hours which is spread over a series of sessions or two full days.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations.

How to book

Courses require a minimum number of candidates to be able to go ahead. If you have a group who would like to complete the course together, courses can be arranged by request during normal centre opening hours.

All prices include course material and appropriate personal protective equipment.

This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

British Canoeing - Start Paddling (Taster Session)

Experience your first session on the water; learning useful skills for an enjoyable paddling experience. It aims to provide you with the basic knowledge to enable you to safely get in and out of your boat, make it move and return to your start point. This is your first step into the world of paddling, ensuring you feel safe, confident and ready to progress to the Discover Award.

RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 2 - Basic Skills

Developing the techniques to sail independently.

On completion of this course, you will have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. It will be assumed that every student starting this course has already mastered the practical skills and absored the background knowledge required for Start Sailing. Both courses can be combined. Dinghy or multihull capsize recovery will be conducted in a controlled manner, one boat at a time, with a suitable rescue boat in attendance.

The duration of this course is 16 hours which will be spread over a series of sessions or over two full days.

RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 3 - Better Sailing

Consolidate basic skills and improve techniques.

 

On completion of the course the successful sailor will be safety conscious and capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light to moderate conditions. The improver course seeks to bridge the gap between Start Sailing, Basic Sailing and the five advanced modules by offering an introduction to the different modules, allowing sailors to select better their preferred route within the sport. Better Sailing is intended to make the transition easier to those sailors wishing to progress further through the scheme, allowing for opportunity to practise and consolidate sailing techniques and experience some of the activities the Advanced modules have to offer, helping to build confidence and support development of good technique and independent sailing. Additional module options are non-compulsory for completion of the Better Sailing course. They are designed to provide an introduction to the various aspects of sailing. Which elements are chosen should be discussed by the student and instructor where practical, students should be provided with the opportunity to sail different dinghies during the course, single and double-handers.

The duration of the course is 16 hours which is spread over a series of sessions or over two full days.

Debdale Outdoor Centre offers the following additional RYA modules: Seamanship Skills, Sailing With Spinnakers and Performance Sailing.

British Canoeing Paddle Discover Award (2 Days)

The Discover Award allows you to develop your decision making and practical skills for a fun and safe time on the water, taking you on the next steps towards becoming a proficient and independent paddler. Learn how to choose and effectively use equipment, whilst developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; giving you the confidence to progress to making your own choices with the Explore Award.

Price: £158 per person

British Canoeing Paddle Explore Award (2 Days)

The Explore Award gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport. Working with a coach you will be able to develop a programme that suits what you need. Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. Recognising your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment.

Price: £158 per person

RYA Level 1 Start Powerboating

This course is an introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.
