Aaron is one of our brilliant swimming members at East Manchester Leisure Centre, but we all know him as” Az”.  All the staff know Aaron as he likes to chat to us and we enjoy talking to him.

Aaron has uncontrolled Epilepsy and brain damage and has many seizures in a day.  He visits us 3 times a week to complete 40 lengths (very quickly).  Aaron likes to come to East Manchester Leisure Centre as he describes it as “a nice, calm place with very helpful staff”.  Swimming also plays an important role in keeping Aaron fit, he adds “swimming helps with my fitness and heart, because of my epilepsy I have to try and stay fit”.

When Aaron comes swimming, he uses the main pool and swims next to the wall, so that the Lifeguards can easily help him when needed. The Lifeguards are well trained with these situations, so are on hand as a team to assist Aaron when he has a seizure. He is always accompanied by his Nana, who also keeps a watchful eye on him, making sure he is OK. When Aaron was asked what he liked about his swimming sessions, he said “Everything, mostly the people are also very nice and welcoming, even when they have to get in the pool for me, they are kind and helpful.”

We asked Aaron if he would recommend us to other people, he said “ yes, its amazing. They are really helpful at all times”

We are pleased that our sessions at East Manchester Leisure Centre are inclusive and accessible to all and would encourage anyone with additional needs to come and see us! We can’t wait to welcome you!
