Orpington Literary Festival Launches at Better Library

Back for a third year, Orpington’s celebration of the written and spoken word returns this month with appearances from sixteen talented authors.

The programme – which runs from May 13 – 18 – kicks off at Better's Orpington Library, where bestselling author of more than fifty-five novels, James Swallow, will discuss his work and sign copies of his books.

The following day, local writers Annie Lyons Kerry Barrett will discuss their work and inspiration.

Orpington Library will also host a number of children’s authors throughout the week including Annabelle Sami, Allison Parkinson, Sheena Roberts and EL Norry. Yoto Carnegie Medal shortlisted author Nathanael Lessore will talk with local year 7 and 8 and pupils about his book, ‘Steady For This’, while Chitra Soundar will host a writing workshop.

In addition, on Saturday, author-illustrator Matt Robertson will invite families to explore the wonders of the natural world in an interactive session.

Other venues taking part in the festival include Pato Lounge which will be running a literary-themed quiz, while London South East College’s BR6 Bakehouse hosts Nicky Forbes (drummer with punk band The Revillos) and music journalist Alf Martin to discuss their music industry-themed books.

Also at BR6 Bakehouse and bringing the week to a splendid conclusion, Falkland’s War veteran Simon Weston CBE will be in conversation with historian, writer and broadcaster Dr Tessa Dunlop. Simon is acclaimed for his struggles to triumph over his injuries and redefine his role in life, while bestselling author Tessa is well-known for speaking out on important issues.

Orpington Literary Festival has been organised by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Bromley Libraries, and supported by Rotary Orpington District E-club.
