"Life in the Old Dogs" to launch in Swindon
A fresh and energetic programme for older adults is arriving this winter, as Life in the Old Dogs launches its popular over-50s team sports sessions in Swindon. Starting in December at several venues - including the GLL-operated Dorcan Recreation Complex - the sessions bridge the gap between fast-paced competitive sport and slower-paced walking sports, offering the perfect balance of challenge, fun and accessibility.
The programme has already flourished in Bath, where GLL gave a helping hand to get the project off the ground and grow into a sustainable community initiative. Now, with expansion into Swindon, the organisation is welcoming both previous players and complete newcomers to take part.
Mark Harrison, Community Sports Manager for GLL’s Bath & North East Somerset and Swindon partnership, said the new sessions will have a meaningful impact on local residents: “We’re incredibly proud to support Life in the Old Dogs as it expands into Swindon. These sessions deliver proven physical and mental health benefits - improving fitness, reducing isolation, and giving people the confidence to stay active. They’re a brilliant way for over-50s to reconnect with the joy of team sports in a welcoming, social environment.”
As the Old Dogs philosophy highlights, they are “all about team sports - exclusively for the over-50s,” with players encouraged to take part at their own pace. Many stay after sessions for coffee, lunch, or a well-earned pint, making social connection just as important as the exercise.
Long-time participant Ollie Millett says the programme has transformed his life:
“I’m fitter, have lost weight, made lots of new friends, and look forward to every session.” Another member, Chris Kane, adds: “The games are full of funny moments, flashes of brilliance, and plenty of friendly banter… everyone fits right in.”
