We are pleased to announce we are launching a free ‘Dementia-Friendly’ swimming sessions at Hatfield Swim Centre this month as part of a funded initiative in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Council. These sessions aim to enhance the swimming experience of those living with dementia and their carers, helping to remove barriers, making swimming more accessible in a friendly, safe environment. Swimming has many health benefits, including reduced anxiety, improved mood and enhanced wellbeing.

Sessions will be hosted by a qualified swim teacher who will be on hand to assist swimmers. These sessions can be used as a familiarisation session to address any questions or concerns.

Some of the benefits of swimming include;

Mental Well-Being:

    • Clears the Mind: Swimming soothes agitation and reduces anxiety. The calming effect of water can help individuals with dementia feel more relaxed and centred.
    • Encourages Positivity: Engaging in swimming can boost mood and promote a positive outlook on life.
    • Builds self-worth: Accomplishing physical activity in the water fosters a sense of achievement and self-worth

Physical Exercise:

    • Low Impact: Swimming is a gentle form of exercise, making it easy on joints. It provides a workout without putting excessive strain on the body.
    • Weightless Environment; Being in the water supports the body, allowing movement without the usual weight-bearing impact.

Social Interaction:

  • Reduced Loneliness: Swimming pools serve as meeting points, offering opportunities for socializing and reducing feelings of isolation.
  • Making friends: Regular swimming sessions can introduce individuals to new friends and create a sense of community

Promotes Healthy Sleep Patterns:

Whether it is for a refresher on swimming basics or are looking to improve your technique, these sessions will aim to improve the physical and mental health and the quality of life for those in stages of dementia.
