Winter at Stanborough Park is always a magical time and December 2022 was no exception. The cool weather provided us first with a prolonged period of frost, making the park look like a winter wonderland, with crisp, frosty leaves and icy trees all around. Then in mid December we were treated to a week of snow, blanketing the grass and painting the trees with white as well as freezing most of both the North & South lakes over. All this picturesque winter weather set the mood for Christmas as well as providing excellent sledging and snowballing opportunities for the young at heart.

Following on from our hugely popular Xplorer orienteering events, run in conjunction with Welwyn Hatfield Council; we were able to offer a simplified festive version for our Christmas walkers in the form of the "Snowman Search". Similar to last year’s highly successful Gnome hunt, for Christmas 2022 our searchers had to find 20 jolly snowmen cards located all around the North Lake area. Lots of children and families joined in the free fun of seeing how many snowmen they could spot and finding out what their yuletide appropriate names were, over the two week Christmas period.

The Xplorer discovery events are an ongoing program of free entertainment and a fun learning opportunity, run at Stanborough and also at other parks across the Welwyn Hatfield district from Easter to October on selected dates. Welhat Sports have plans to deliver Xplorer in the Spring and Summer across the parks in the borough. To find out further info on times and locations please visit: https://www.xplorer.org.uk/. The team at Better are looking forward to this year’s events as they are always very popular with the children that take part and make a great day out.

Both Welhat Sports and Better believe there is tremendous value in the promotion of this free activity for youngsters, as it provides a great opportunity for outdoor exploration, beneficial to the physical and mental wellbeing of the children, as well as teaching them the basics of orienteering.
