Once again Better is celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award for Stanborough Park, as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks; one of 2208 UK winners this year.

The award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces. After two years that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that Stanborough Park has achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy.

Stanborough Park is a vital green space for the community in Welwyn & Hatfield. This award is testament to all the hard work of staff and volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

The Green Flag Award scheme was first set up in 1997in an effort to improve the quality of the UK’s green spaces, many of which had fallen into disrepair and disuse, following years of underfunding and neglect. A Team of experts was set up, with representatives with a wide range of backgrounds and experience in various aspects of the green spaces vision.

The Team’s intention was to establish a set of agreed standards of good open space management, to help to justify and evaluate funding, and to encourage people back into the parks and green spaces of the UK. The scheme has been a great success as the scheme became more established, other green spaces began to apply for the Award, and now Green Flags fly over a whole range of venues, including parks, recreation grounds, canals, reservoirs and even cemeteries.
