Yvonne joined the Healthwise programme here at Windrush Leisure Centre and this is how she found the experience:

I started the gym after my Diabetic nurse and doctor said it might help me with my diabetes. I said that I would be willing to give it a go although I was a little bit nervous.

When I first went for a talk with an instructor about what I would like to achieve in the gym, I said I would like to feel a bit fitter and more able to move and they said they would be able to help me.

They did!

When I first started the instructor stayed with me on all the machines, and set me realistic and achievable targets.

We then slowly increased the time I spent on each machine as I built up my confidence.

I then progressed to working on the machines on my own without the support of the instructor, however they were always around to help at any time and they were more than happy to do so.

We also had a good laugh and I made lots of friends along the way by meeting new people in the gym.

I am visually impaired but a lot of people mention to me how well I am doing and they also are always happy to help if or when I need it.

As I have not had good sight all of my life and it is getting worse I still very much enjoy my time at the gym.

When I first started I took my guide dog Tilly and she was made very welcome like me.

I will continue to come to the gym as I really do enjoy my workout and meeting people. I would recommend the journey to anyone who is advised to try it by the doctor.
