SUPPORTING CARERS UK ACTIVE APRIL

Throughout April we are proud to be supporting Carers Active April.  The main aim of the campaign by Carers UK is to support unpaid carers to be more physically active.

As part of Carers Active April, we are encouraging carers to join us for a free Carers Welcome Day.  This will be a chance to have a tour of your local centre, meet other carers and try a free activity.  As part of the session you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the wide range of memberships and activities available to you.  Whether it’s in our gyms, pools or fitness classes, there’s bound to be an activity you love.

Carers Welcome Day – Wednesday 19th April 2023.

  • Energise Leisure Centre from 12 noon till 1pm. A free welcome session where you can speak to the centre team about different activities and membership options specifically at Energise Leisure Centre and across the York Partnership.
  • York Leisure Centre from 2pm till 4.15pm. A free welcome session as above for York Leisure Centre between 2pm and 3pm, followed by either a Swim session between 3pm and 4pm or a Basics Circuits class between 3.15pm and 4.15pm.
  • Burnholme Sports Centre from 4pm till 6pm. A free welcome session as above for Burnholme Sports Centre between 4pm and 5pm, followed by either a Basics Circuits Class or access to a badminton or table tennis court between 5pm and 6pm.

The free activity is optional but must be booked to secure a space – please book by emailing our Community Sports Manager on natalie.thomas@gll.org

If you wish to attend simply to find out what the centre has to offer you are more than welcome to do so.  Please email natalie.thomas@gll.org for more information.

Research by the charity Carers UK shows how important being physically active is to carers, with 73% saying that being physically active makes them feel good about themselves and helps them to feel more connected to other people.

However, three quarters of unpaid carers (76%) are not able to do as much physical activity as they would like because of the pressures of their caring role.  Many want to know how to build this into their busy lives.

The Carers Active campaign is funded by Sport England through the National Lottery. It is part of the ongoing Carers Active project which aims to make it easier for more of the UK’s estimated 5.7 million unpaid carers to be more physically active and feel the benefits of moving more.  Unpaid carers can sign up to the Carers Active mailing list to receive updates about Carers Active April.
