Sporting Family Change are a Bath based charity that aim to use “sport to empower, inspire and motivate local families into making positive, lifelong changes, creating opportunities for all”. In 2018 the charity decided to set a target for those it works with of completing the Westonbirt Triathlon either individually or as part of a team. The sprint triathlon involved a 400m pool swim, a 24km cycle ride followed by a 5km run. GLL provided pool time and free swimming tuition to help those who couldn’t swim strongly.

The first swimming session took place at Culverhay Leisure Centre and was a closed fun swim for the group. This acted as an informal return to the water for many and provided an opportunity to be introduced to the GLL swimming instructor. Swimming tuition began in November 2018 using the Teaching Pool at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre. Many of the attendees were unable to swim a length of this pool (approx. 12 metres) at the start of their swimming training, whilst some reported a lack of water confidence.

Seven months of weekly swimming sessions later, the triathlon took place on May 31st 2019. One of the inspirational competitors, Ruth, was unable to swim when her training began. Ruth successfully completed the 400M swim along with all the others that received training who attempted the event.

A big well done to all those who took part!
