From 6 April 2024, it will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling.

The Welsh Government is introducing this law to improve the quality and quantity of how we collect and separate waste.

At Maindy Centre we are proud to be working with Cardiff Council to implement these changes in our centre and we would like you as our valued member to help us recycle better.

Shortly you will see recycling stations placed at key points around the centre. Each station will be clearly labelled with what materials are placed into each bin.

We are separating the following materials at these recycling stations:

  • Paper and card
  • Metal, plastic and cartons
  • General waste materials i.e. blue roll

Why the law is being introduced and the benefits

Wales is currently third in the world when it comes to recycling waste from households. The recycling rate of waste material collected by local authorities is currently at just over 65% and helps save around 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

This is an important step towards reaching zero waste, reducing carbon emissions and tackling the climate emergency.

The Welsh Government want to keep materials in use for as long as possible. With the costs of materials rising, keeping high quality materials in use will help the economy and support the supply chains. For example, by avoiding landfill tax and creating job opportunities.

The new law supports the actions from the Welsh Governments circular economy strategy, Beyond recycling.

The aim is to build on the success of household recycling and ensure high recycling rates across workplaces too. The benefits of increasing recycling are that it:

  • increases the amount and quality of recycling that can then be used by Welsh manufacturers
  • supports workplaces to reduce their waste
  • reduces carbon emissions
  • helps the economy to create a greener Wales

Thank you for your support and please let us know of any improvements you think would help us recycle better at Maindy@gll.org
