At 59, Trisha Howells is affectionately known as the “Queen of the Gym” – and for good reason. A proud member of Western Leisure Centre for over 12 years, Trisha is a daily presence who brings energy, encouragement and warmth to everyone she meets.

For Trisha, Western Leisure Centre isn’t just a place to work out – it’s a lifeline. “The people of Western saved me,” she often says, and it’s clear this space – and the people in it – have been central to her journey. A few years ago, Trisha experienced a serious health scare. It was her instinct, determination, and the quick actions of a fellow gym member – a nurse – that made all the difference. The support that followed, from staff and friends at the centre, was overwhelming. They rallied around her during recovery: offering help, checking in and cheering her on. It was community at its very best.

Coming back to the gym wasn’t easy – but Trisha never gave up. Supported by the GP referral programme and accessible fitness classes, she started small and stayed consistent. Every visit, every step and every class was part of her rebuild – not just physically, but emotionally too. Today, Trisha is back to doing what she loves: walking, cycling, cold-water dips and encouraging others to find their own path to wellbeing. She’s also part of the Walking Football team at Western, who recently celebrated a big win at the centre’s first ever tournament!

Trisha’s journey shows what’s possible when a leisure centre is more than just a building. Western is a space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities come to feel better, move more and belong. With her background as a fitness instructor and personal trainer, Trisha is always ready to help others feel welcome and confident – whether it’s your first time at the gym or your hundredth. She embodies the spirit of Western: inclusive, supportive and full of heart. From curry nights to annual celebrations, from recovery to resilience, Trisha is a living reminder that when people come together through movement and community, incredible things can happen. Trisha isn’t just part of Western Leisure Centre – she is Western.
