Waddon Leisure Centre is excited to announce our ambitious new sustainability targets as we work towards creating a healthier planet alongside a healthier community. We understand that environmental responsibility is a top priority for our customers, and we are committed to making significant strides in reducing our environmental footprint by the end of 2026.

Our strategy is focused on two critical areas where we can make the most immediate and substantial difference: Waste Reduction and Energy Efficiency.

Waste Reduction: Targeting 55% Recycling

Our primary waste goal is to recycle 55% of our total operational waste. This is an ambitious leap that requires a collective effort. To achieve this, we will be:

Improving Segregation: Rolling out clearer, more intuitive recycling stations across the entire facility, from the fitness suites to the changing rooms and cafe areas.
Staff Training: Implementing mandatory training for all staff members on correct waste sorting protocols to ensure internal processes are flawless.
Customer Education: Launching an awareness campaign to work closely with our customers, providing simple guidance on what items belong in which bins. We want everyone to understand that every plastic bottle, piece of cardboard, and food wrapper counts toward achieving this vital goal.

Energy Efficiency: 2% Reduction in Electricity Consumption

To combat the significant energy demands of a large leisure facility, we are targeting a 2% reduction in overall electricity consumption. This seemingly small percentage represents a substantial saving in both resources and carbon emissions. Our key strategies include:

Optimising Systems: Investing in strategic improvements, such as the further optimisation of our lighting systems, potentially installing more motion sensors and upgrading to high-efficiency LED bulbs where necessary.
HVAC Management: Fine-tuning our Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) schedules to ensure systems only run when the centre is in peak use, avoiding unnecessary energy expenditure during quieter periods.
Mindful Use Promotion: Encouraging a culture of energy mindfulness across the entire facility, reminding both staff and customers to switch off lights and conserve power whenever possible.

We are excited about the journey ahead and look forward to sharing our progress with the community, ensuring Waddon Leisure Centre remains a place for both personal well-being and planetary health.
