Friday 28th July saw a team from the Waterfront leisure centre and Better Greenwich Sports Development deliver physical activity and sports sessions in Woolwich’s General Gordon Square, located in the heart of the royal borough of Greenwich.  The event was part of the Holiday Fun Fridays and Woolwich Lates campaigns, which are initiatives aimed at boosting the high streets and increasing activity in the day and later into the evening, for the benefit of local businesses and residents. The Woolwich Lates campaign is a new for 2023 and was funded by the Mayor of London. The campaign builds on the exciting range of attractions, entertainment and food options there are in Woolwich.

The theme for Friday event was fitness, health and well-being.  Better’s community sports development team offered table tennis for the whole day, as well as promoting the programmes and initiatives on offer throughout the summer holidays.   From 5pm it was all about fitness, with the team from the Waterfront leisure centre taking over the piazza in General Gordon Square with a promotional stall and four mass exercise classes.

The classes were delivered by the wonderful Pauline, who brought an entourage of her die-hard followers who delivered a demo in step aerobics. The classes delivered for the general public included aerobics, dance fit and Soca fitness.  The classes were an undoubted success with at least 25 people in each session.  It was brilliant to see so many residents of varying ages, backgrounds and genders taking part, enjoying the benefits of physical activity. These sessions generated a number of enquiries regarding the classes and availability of similar sessions at our Leisure Centres.

Better’s Partnership Manager Richard Gallagher said, ‘We were extremely proud to have taken part in this event, it’s important that local people are able to access the high street and benefit from the products and services local businesses offer.  This event was a great way for us to showcase what we have to offer as an inclusive community based leisure provider’’.
