We are pleased to let you know that Kensington & Chelsea council will be making some essential repairs and maintenance works to the facilities at Better, Kensington Leisure Centre throughout 2019. 

PHASE 1 – First Floor Changing Room Refurbishments

Phase 1 of the project will begin on Monday 28th January and run until early April 2019. 

The showers in the male and female changing rooms on the first floor will not be available for members to use for 9 weeks whilst repair and improvement works are made. However, the changing area will still be accessible throughout this period.

Customers accessing the gym, studios or Spa who wish to use shower facilities will be able to use the sports hall changing rooms on the lower ground floor of the centre.

Signs will be in place to direct you but if you are unsure, please speak to a member of our staff.

PHASE 2 – Swimming Pool Changing Room Refurbishments

Phase 2 of the project will commence in early April 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by mid July 2019. These works will affect the swimming pool changing rooms, toilets and shower areas. Please be aware that the repairs and maintenance work being undertaken during phase 2 will affect the following areas for a period of 14 weeks:

  • Male Swimming Pool Changing Rooms – closed for refurbishment works. Alternative changing rooms and showers will be available on the first floor, with direct access between the pool and the changing rooms.
  • Female Swimming Pool Changing Rooms – will remain open
  • Family Changing Cubicles – 50% of cubicles will remain open
  • Pre-Cleanse Shower Area – 50% of showers will remain open
  • Male Toilets – will remain open
  • Female Toilets – closed for refurbishment works. Alternative toilets will be available within the female swimming pool changing rooms.
  • Disabled Changing Room – will remain open
  • Disabled Shower Room – closed for refurbishment works. An alternative disabled shower will be available in the pre-cleanse shower area, and the adjacent disabled toilet will remain open.
  • Schools / Group Changing Rooms – two changing rooms closed for refurbishment works. Two new temporary changing rooms have been constructed by the main entrance to the swimming pool changing rooms and will be used as a direct replacement.

Please be aware that once this stage of refurbishment is completed there will be further works required to be undertaken. We will be in contact with you again to confirm these details in due course.

Whilst we appreciate the lengthy disruption these works will cause, it’s important to note that there will be no closure to the swimming pools and no change to any swimming lessons or pool timetables during this time.


Q: Why do these works need to be completed?
A: Since opening in 2015 the centre has been managing its services with some inherent building issues The works required are to resolve leaks from the swimming pool changing rooms and first floor shower areas and the roof which are affecting the building. The council have been working with the original building contractor on a schedule of works to resolve these issues permanently whilst trying to ensure that the impacts to customers are reduced as much as possible.


Q: What will be the benefits to customers once the works are complete?
A: Customers will benefit from having upgraded changing room and shower facilities in the swimming pool area, and upgraded showers in the first floor changing rooms. We will also be improving these areas by adding better lighting in vanity areas, new shower timers to provide a longer water duration, introducing hair straighteners, an additional swimsuit dryer and more. Floor vinyl will be replaced in the first floor showers to ensure issues with water pooling around the drains will be resolved, and new floor and wall tiles will be installed in the swimming pool changing rooms to make the space fresher and cleaner.


Q: What is being done to minimise the impact to customers?
A: The works are being staggered to avoid the closure affecting multiple floors at the same time. Where possible additional changing or showering facilities are being installed, or at least reprovided elsewhere in the building. We appreciate that closing changing and shower areas temporarily will impact customers and we apologise for the inconvenience that will be caused during this refurbishment period.

Q: What happens to Spa customers when the first floor showers are closed?
A: We are looking to install 2 temporary showers in the first floor changing rooms in order to minimise the impact to Spa customers.


Q: Will there be any closure to the swimming pool during the works?
A: No, the works do not require closing any of the swimming pools. The pool timetable and swimming lessons will continue as normal.
