GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), in partnership with Lambeth Council’s Gifted and Talented Programme, supports talented athletes who live, train, or are educated in the borough. 2019/20 saw 108 athletes funded with £59,700 worth of support. All the athletes are local and many use Better facilities, whether that is for their sports sessions or their strength & conditioning and fitness training.

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – JANUARY 2020

Due to the festive period and end of year celebrations, only a few athletes competed during December. We are pleased to announce that the first Athlete of the Month winner for 2019 was awarded to Kace Bartley (Squash) who competed in the Monte Carlo Squash Classic 2019 competition held in Monaco where she impressively reached the second round. Her first round included a 3-0 victory (11-8, 11-9, 11-5) over the opponent who knocked her out of previous competition which reflects some excellent progress. Unfortunately she received a tough 2nd round draw where she came up against the eventual winner of the competition (6-11, 6-11, 4-11). Kace is next in action where she competes at the Edinburgh Sports Club Open at the end of January.

OTHER RESULTS

INTERNATIONAL: Alexandra Snowdon (Ice Skating) recently competed at the British Short Track Championships held at Ice Sheffield in Yorkshire.  This was held over two days and competing in the U14 category, Alexandra won all six of her races (333m x 2, 500m x 2 and the 777m x 2) and as a result was crowned, for the second consecutive year, the British U14 Ladies British Champion & Gold Medallist – A fantastic achievement. Over the coming months Alexandra will be competing at a number of national and international competitions in Italy and the Netherlands where Alexandra is hoping to pick up two more British Championship titles. Sameer Sunder-Rajan (Fencing) - Sameer took part in the Olimpici competition in Hungary for the Szolnok Cup in both the under 12 and under 13. He won the bronze in u12 and came 28th in under13.

NATIONAL:

Hector Jones (Fencing) and Hal Jones (Fencing) continued their excellent form with respective gold medals in the elite epee junior series in the u12 and u17 categories. Hal next competes at an international in Bratislava in January where there will be over 600 competitors. Sabrina Jones (Fencing) followed up a fantastic bronze medal towards the end of 2019 with an impressive 5th place in the poules but was unfortunately knocked out after this. It is worth mentioning Sabrina was competing against athletes up to two years older than her so this really is a hugely impressive effort.

Best of luck to all our athletes at their upcoming events.
