Eight members of the management gave up their time to cook and host, the management team were split into two groups of four with one group doing the food preparation and then another group of four on hosting. The teams were given expert help and guidance by a friendly Food Cycle team to ensure the day ran smoothly.

With guidance and support from the Lewisham Food Cycle Team, we prepared and served a 3-course meal to nearly 50 residents.

The Food Cycle meals run at the Lewisham Irish Centre every Wednesday & Saturdays each week providing a warm space & activities in addition to a hot meal, free of charge, to the local people of Lewisham,

In the last year, in partnership with Food Cycle the Lewisham Irish Centre have provided over 800 hours volunteer hours, provided 640 meals delivered through 'BIA Project', 68 families supported through youth services & 103 older individuals accessing weekly classes such as Zumba.

Food Cycle exists to help tackle food poverty and reduce food waste by making meals out of food that would normally go off to landfill. The meals today were prepared with Surplus food sourced from around the local area, surplus food is food, which is fit for human consumption but has no commercial value for the retailer. This food, which may ultimately go to waste, may have become damaged in transit, might be past its ‘best before’ date or might have been over-ordered. It’s still perfectly good food, and Food Cycle put it to good use. Wednesday’s offering was Carrot & Coriander soup, followed by Vegetarian Bolognese with croissant bread pudding as the dessert.

The management team thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon and are looking forward to their next challenge, so if you know of a group looking for volunteers, please reach out to us.

We would also like to thank Mel and her team at Food Cycle for their patience, guidance and support to ensure the afternoon ran smoothly.
