Throughout April we are proud to be supporting Carers Active April.  The main aim of the campaign by Carers UK is to support unpaid carers to be more physically active.

As part of Carers Active April, we are encouraging carers to join us for a free Carers Welcome Day. This will be a chance to have a tour of your local centre, meet other carers and try a free activity.  As part of the session you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the wide range of memberships and activities available to you, while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.  Whether it’s in our gyms, pools or fitness classes, there’s bound to be an activity you love.

Carers Welcome Days

  • Friday 21st April from 11am-1pm at Ladywell Arena. The centre is offering a centre tour, free gym induction and a free hour in the gym
  • Friday 21st April from 10am -8pm at Wavelengths Leisure Centre. A free swim is included. This takes place in slow, medium and fast lanes, so you can take things at your own pace.  If swimming is not your thing we are also offering free gym.

The free activity is optional, if you wish to attend simply to find out what the centre has to offer you are more than welcome to do so, all centres will have someone on hand to show you around.  To book your spot or for more information, please contact Matthew.houghton@gll.org  (Direct booking link can be added once set up)

Research by the charity Carers UK shows how important being physically active is to carers, with 73% saying that being physically active makes them feel good about themselves and helps them to feel more connected to other people.

However, three quarters of unpaid carers (76%) are not able to do as much physical activity as they would like because of the pressures of their caring role.  Many want to know how to build this into their busy lives.

The Carers Active campaign is funded by Sport England through the National Lottery. It is part of the ongoing Carers Active project which aims to make it easier for more of the UK’s estimated 5.7 million unpaid carers to be more physically active and feel the benefits of moving more.  Unpaid carers can sign up to the Carers Active mailing list to receive updates about Carers Active April.
