On Tuesday 16th May, Glass Mill Leisure Centre hosted the London Youth Games Para Swimming event.

83 competitors from 12 London boroughs took part, with London Youth Games staff being support by 3 Games Force volunteers and 14 Games Force Team volunteers. Staff from the centre also provided help with the setting up and setting down of the event.

Swimmers took part in multiple events from 25m to mixed team relays. The Royal Borough of Greenwich won both the Boys and the Girls events. The London Borough of Wandsworth came runners up in the boy’s event with the London Borough of Bromley finishing runners up in the girl’s competition.  The London Borough of Bromley also finished 3rd in the boys competition with the London Borough of Richmond finishing 3rd in the girls competition.

The Para Swimming Gala saw young people with a range of disabilities taking part in this event and we would like to thank all those who came with these young people to help and support them.

This is the first time Glass Mill Leisure Centre has hosted this event and the London Youth Games team commended the staff and the centre, and are looking to use the centre again for future events.

London Youth Games was launched in 1977 and is one of the world’s leading annual youth sports events, with the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Mo Farah being just two names who have taken part in this event and have then gone on to Olympic glory.

The Para Swimming event forms just one of the eleven sports available to disabled young Londoners, and is open to any secondary school aged child across the 33 London boroughs.

We are proud to have hosted this event and we look forward to working London Youth Games on hosting future events at Glass Mill Leisure Centre. And finally, a big congratulations to all those who took part, every swimmer left with a smile on their face.
