On Thursday 23rd November Glass Mill Leisure Centre hosted a Carer’s Rights Day event in the Atrium.

This event was organised and run by the Adult Social Care team at Lewisham Council and supported by their unpaid carer’s service provider Imago.

The aim of the day was to make unpaid carers across the borough aware of what services, offers and opportunities are available to them.

There were 15 stalls in the Atrium area with talks going on in the Mill Studio. All the stalls were aimed at providing help and support to unpaid careers in the borough, whether it’s advice about Dementia or will writing, many areas were covered. After school activities were also put on for young carers, this was a mixture of arts and crafts, board games and the opportunity to use the gym at the leisure centre.

The event was sound tracked by primary school pupils from Grinling Gibbons school in Deptford playing steel drums, their musical performances taking place outside the centre on the edge of Cornmill Gardens which certainly drew a lot of passers by into the centre who stopped to find out what was going on. Later on in the event they had some African drumming.

Hannah Gilmour Partnership Manager for the Lewisham Partnership said, "This was such a fantastic event to raise awareness of the services available to unpaid carers in the borough. Unpaid carers work often goes unnoticed, yet it is so important. So this was a great occasion to shine a light on all the hard work that they do!"

The event was very well received with lots of positive feedback from the local ward councillors who attended, stall holders and everyone involved in the event. The positive feedback was not only for the centre and the event but also the team at Glass Mill.
