Morden Leisure Centre Hosts Celebration for Local Athletes Supported by GLL Sport Foundation

On Wednesday 2nd July, Morden Leisure Centre hosted the London Borough of Merton GLL Sport Foundation celebration event, recognising the outstanding achievements of local athletes supported by the Foundation.

The event was attended by GLL’s Chief Executive for Change and Values, Andy Bindon, along with 19 supported athletes and their guests. James Brackenborough, Partnership Manager, provided an engaging local update during the evening.

A highlight of the event was a live Q&A with two of Merton’s supported athletes: Jane Asher, a remarkable 94-year-old swimmer with 62 gold medals from Masters World and European Championships, and Mark Richardson, a local fencer who also performed a live fencing demonstration.

The celebration was further honoured by the presence of the Mayor of Merton, Cllr Martin Whelton, and the Cabinet Member for Sport & Heritage, Caroline Cooper-Marbiah, who both shared inspiring remarks.

This year, the GLL Sport Foundation supports:

  • 51 local athletes
  • £32,450 in total funding
  • 78% of athletes receiving no other funding
  • 57% of athletes aged under 21, including 25% under 16
  • Representation across 26 different sports

We look forward to welcoming the athletes back to Morden Leisure Centre in the near future to continue celebrating their achievements and supporting their sporting journeys.
