Wimbledon and Morden Leisure Centres upgraded
To kick off the New Year in the Borough of Sport, Councillor Caroline Cooper-Marbiah, Cabinet Member for Sport and Heritage, visited Morden and Wimbledon Leisure Centres to see the transformations that have recently been carried out at both sites.
Wimbledon Leisure Centre dates from 1901, and the centre has maximised the unique character of the building in its refurbishment. The gym and workout space has benefitted from amazing light installations and wall art, as well as new functional equipment, to create an inspirational space for workouts.
The new cycling studio is even more atmospheric – the old lifeless room is now an atmospheric studio with a host of neon lights, a new sound system and instructor’s platform to inspire group cycle classes. The main studio area has new wall art and equipment, as well as dimmable lights to soothe and relax during yoga, Pilates and mindfulness classes.
And the revitalised changing rooms and reception area will improve your whole experience, with more pleasant surroundings post-exercise and better engagement with enthusiastic centre staff.
At Morden Leisure Centre, you’ll find inspirational wall art throughout. In response to customer demand, the free weight and resistance area has been extended to give the best range of equipment available in Morden. Treadmills taken out to accommodate the changes have been redistributed to Wimbledon and the Canons – so they are still available for Merton residents.
Both centres offer something for every age group; Morden has one of the largest swim schools in the country, and both gyms have regular clients in their 90s right down to the extremely popular kids’ gym classes.
After her visits, Councillor Cooper-Marbiah said, “It was fantastic to see the improvements at the two leisure centres – and also to see how popular they both were with Merton residents of all ages.
“The new artwork certainly made me feel inspired to get active. I hope more residents will take advantage of the great work being done by dedicated staff – and try out a new activity in 2023.
“I’m proud that as we try to fulfil our ambition to make Merton a Borough of Sport, our leisure centres have classes that cater for everyone. So even if you haven’t been in before, do go down to your local leisure centre, find out what is going on, and get active!”
