GLL, the UK’s largest charitable social enterprise operating across public leisure and cultural services is proud to announce the launch of its new Physical Activity Inclusion Fund in the London Borough of Newham. The fund will offer community groups the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £5,000 to support projects that improve physical activity levels and enhance social well-being across the borough.

With a total of £30,000 available annually, the fund aims to remove barriers to participation and promote inclusivity through grassroots initiatives that engage local residents in healthier, more active lifestyles.

Colin Coughtrey, GLL's National Community Engagement Manager, said:

“At GLL, we believe in the power of community and the life-changing impact that physical activity can have on people’s wellbeing. The Inclusion Fund is designed to empower local groups to create opportunities that are inclusive, accessible, and truly tailored to the needs of Newham residents. We’re excited to support projects that bring people together and help everyone get more active, regardless of age, ability, or background.”

The initiative supports GLL’s long-standing commitment to social enterprise values and community reinvestment. By providing direct funding to community-led projects, the Inclusion Fund seeks to foster innovation and collaboration that tackle local health inequalities and enhance quality of life.  Funding is available for clubs, charities and organisations to develop projects and initiatives that encourage participation in sports and physical activities or enhance mental health and wellbeing.

The fund officially launched on 15th July at an event hosted by Newham Leisure Centre, with members of the community present as well as representatives from GLL and the London Borough of Newham.

Paul Whiteman, GLL's Partnership Manager in Newham, added:

“Newham is one of the most diverse and dynamic boroughs in London, and we know there’s a huge appetite here for community-driven solutions. This fund will help local organisations deliver targeted activities that reach those who need it most. Whether it's fitness sessions for older adults, inclusive sports for young people with disabilities, or wellbeing programmes for underrepresented groups – we want to hear from you.”

Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care and Councillor for Plaistow South, said: Cllr Neil Wilson said: “It is hugely important that we reach all our communities to encourage them to increase their amount of physical activity.

“This is what Opportunity Newham is all about, and what the GLL is putting into practice. By providing people with the means to take up new challenges, and thus becoming more active there will be a positive contribution towards reducing inequalities in our society.

“I hope people apply and help get Newham moving.”

Applications for the first round of funding open on 15 July 2025 and must be submitted by 1 September 2025. Eligible community groups, charities, and not-for-profit organisations based in Newham are encouraged to apply.
