One NK and the surrounding area of North Hykeham has been subject to anti-social behaviour in recent years, much by younger people who have come from challenging and disadvantaged backgrounds. One NK wanted to turn this into a positive by providing a safe environment for young people to come and take part in supervised sports and activities to give the troubled young people direction and purpose. It was initially hoped that this provision would attract 15-20 young people; however it has surpassed expectations with between 60-100 young people, both males and females in attendance. For these young people they now have somewhere to go and have the opportunity to participate in sports that ordinarily they may not have the chance to be involved in.

The staff members who lead these sessions are very passionate about the group and they are very proud of how popular the club has become and they are continually looking to expand and offer different activities to engage more of the young people in the community. They are constantly engaging with the young people attending and consulting with them as to what they want the club session to grow into and how they can work with them to create an even better environment for them to enjoy.

In total there were an impressive 110 nominations made across 11 categories that seek to reflect the ways in which residents and businesses make positive contributions within our communities. A panel of judges made up of representatives from the sponsor businesses and organisations that fund the awards programme, selected the 33 finalists, three in each category, and determined each category winner, Unfortunately One NK became one of three finalists, watch this space because next year we’re in for a big shot at winning!
