On the 16th January, the North Kesteven Community Team was invited to Ruskin Priory academy to deliver a class and some practical training, on the fundamentals of how to deliver a class to students.

Priory Ruskin Academy, which is part of Prior Academy group who run numerous secondary academies within Lincolnshire, and are currently going through an extensive development into there sports department. Ruskin itself currently has a new fitness suite and purpose built studio.

Alan Gunter (Physical Education lead) reached out to our Community team to see if we would be able to support some training and specifics of how to use equipment. Following discussions both parties, we soon realised there was a bit of a knowledge gap, when it came to delivering varied and structure class using these types of equipment/areas.

Currently the national curriculum for Physical Education focuses on promoting activity though primarily sports/clubs, and very little activity through fitness environment. This could be to limited resources/knowledge within the area, but Priory Academies are now leading the way locally in this.

On the day local PE teachers and support staff were invited to take part in a couple of class tasters using their new equipment and a short education session on how to maximise the equipment usage, how to deliver a great class, communication and coaching techniques, that can be delivered during class.

Speaking after the session, Alan said “he would like to thank Shaun and Karen in delivering a fantastic session to our staff members. So many School’s have fitness suites, studios and sports halls but do not use them to their full potential. Following the session we believe we will now be able to offer a more varied approach to our lesson and hopefully see and increase in our students become more active now and in the future”

Overall the session was a fantastic success and we have been asked back to support Key stage 3 and 4 girls become involved in activity as well as speak in the 6th form careers day.

If you would like to see if offer similar session within your local community, please feel free to contact Shaun for more information. Email:- shaun.fisher@gll.org
