Energise Leisure Centre has completed the first stage of a major transformation of its gym facilities, unveiling a dynamic new layout designed to maximise space, enhance training variety, and elevate the member experience.

At the heart of the transformation is the conversion of the former ICT room into a brand-new cycle studio, creating a dedicated space for spin classes. This strategic move has freed up the main gym floor, allowing for a more efficient and purposeful layout.

Key upgrades include:

  • New Cycle Studio: Housed in the former ICT room, this space now hosts all spin sessions, offering a focused environment for group cycling.
  • Reimagined Gym Floor: The old cycle studio has been repurposed to accommodate weight resistance machines, creating a clearly defined strength training zone.
  • Zoned Equipment Areas: The gym floor is now organised into Weight Resistance Zone, Cardio Zone, Free Weights Area and the new Functional Area.
  • New Functional Training Area: A standout addition, this space includes: 2 new air bikes, full kettlebell set (4kg to 32kg), 1 Ski-Erg, a wide range of functional kit from sandbags to plyo boxes, a brand-new dumbbell set and new floor mats.

Innovation in action

Energise is also proud to be a pilot site for British Rowing, trialing new HD screens on the Concept2 rowing machines located in the gym. The screens include a range of get started, workouts and indoor rowing machine training content to help anyone of different fitness, ages and backgrounds get started on an indoor rowing machine, as well as creating a regular fitness habit on the gym floor.

What’s still to come:

The transformation is ongoing, with several exciting additions arriving soon: Torque resistance sled, Additional squat rack, Dual leg extension and curl machine, Dual abductor and adductor machine, and a Skillmill. A Skillmill is a non-motorised, curved treadmill designed for high-intensity, functional training. Unlike traditional treadmills, it is powered entirely by the user's movement, which means the speed and intensity are controlled by how fast or hard you push.

A space for every workout:

This transformation reflects Energise’s commitment to creating a versatile, inclusive, and motivating environment for all fitness levels. Whether you're into strength training, cardio, group cycling, or functional fitness, the new layout ensures there's a dedicated space for your goals. The gym transformation will allow for additional class programming including Healthwise and Functional Fitness classes.

“We’ve reimagined the gym to better serve our members’ needs and utilising the space more efficiently,” said Danny Borom, General Manager for Energise. “This transformation is about more than just new equipment—it’s about creating a space where everyone can train effectively and feel inspired. GLL is a charitable social enterprise and our ethos means that any trading surpluses are reinvested back into our services and facilities, making this transformation possible. We hope to complete the works by the middle of July 2025.”
