On the 12th of June, Better Gym Mere Green played at Craven Cottage in a 6-a-side tournament. Performing really well before unfortunatley falling in the quater finals after an unlucky injury break.

To start of the group stages, the team put in a really strong performance to win 1-0, it was a tight affair for a lot of the game until the eventual breakthrough, but once that came, we turned the screw adding pressure and not letting the opposition touch the ball. Throughout the game our goalkeeper did not have much to do, but once the goal went in, the opposition struggled to even get out of there half, let alone get near our goal!

Our second game was against what we believed to be the strongest team we faced on the day, the game finished 1-1, with Team MG going behind within the first 5 minutes of the game after getting caught cold on the ball, but with a very end to end game, it took a long throw from the goalkeeper to create a 2-on-1 in our favour, and with one striker passing it across to the other, they could not miss, making the game 1-1! After that it was a lot of back and forth, a few near misses and good saves at both ends, this would then be the 2 teams to progress from the group.

In our final group stage game, we played the only other team that could have progressed before the game kicked off, leaving everything on this game, but from the off it was a dominant performance, and you could really tell we had started to gel as a team. By the time the second half of the game rolled round we were 2 goals up knowing we were cruising through, so as a team began to sit back and just keep the ball amongst ourselves, very quiet end to the game but just how we would like it, finishing 2-0!

We then hit the quater final, against the team that would go on to lose in the final. Started the game off strong dominated for the first 5 minutes, the oppositiion then went on to counter, and a lethal shot from our right side, took a nick off the defender and nestled into the bottom left corner of the net, making the game 1-0, as the game went on the opposition started to build pressure, eventually feeding the ball through, which both goalkeeper and an outfielder from both teams went to claim, 2 Mere Green players collided and were urged to come off the pitch, putting an outfielder in goal and bringing us down to 5 players, this did however end the game for us as they were able to get a second and see the game out 2-0.

If you fancy yourslves against team MG, sign up and come along to our football tournament on the 20th of July! We cant wait to see you all there, and im sure we will be back at Craven Cottage next year for another crack at the title!
