The London Youth Games (LYG), formed in 1977 is a prestigious programme that provides high quality sporting events for London boroughs to compete in. LYG is an inter borough competition, so entrants must either live or go to school in one of the 33 boroughs to be eligible to compete. Achieved records of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s best position in LYG date back to 2003 and this season’s impressive 8th place finish is the best. Previously the highest was 9th achieved in 2007 and 2015.

The 2022 season has been a great success as the Royal Borough of Greenwich have taken part in 27 events across the capital and given 221 youngsters a great experience at the competitions.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich won 1 trophy, 1 runner up shield and 61 medals; 21 golds, 23 silver, 17 bronze. On average 27.6% of competitors for the Royal Borough of Greenwich got a medal at LYG 2022. Statistically 9.5% of entrants won a gold medal. These stats are inflated by participants who won more than one medal but it highlights how impressive the medal haul was in the context of how many competed.

May saw significant activity with 358 young people attending the 24 LYG trials, training sessions and events. 287 of them had not competed at LYG before.  Over the course of the season 1081 participants were involved in the project and a collective throughput of 2224 young people across the 167 sessions.

Greenwich’s season set off at good pace in the cross country with the girls team placing 8th. Next up was the para swimming where the Royal Borough of Greenwich won the trophy in the girl’s event and were runners up for the boys with plenty of individual medals.  Then as Easter approaches LYG Springs back into action as there are events nearly every weekend. The male basketball team from Greenwich Titans were 5th, a new partnership with the AHOY Centre helped the young rowers glide to a 5th place too and our tennis team just missed out on the Finals with a 9th place. On the penultimate weekend thanks to the support from Greenwich Tritons the borough got bronze at the London Aquatic Centre in the Aquathlon and on the final day of action at Lee Valley Athletics Centre there was some individual glory for participants representing the Royal Borough of Greenwich with a bronze medal in the girls’ 1500 meters and silver medal in the boys’ javelin.  If you are a parent, coach or teacher who wants more information you can view the list of sports in the season on the LYG website and contact RBGSportDevelopment@GLL.ORG for more information.
