On Thursday 22nd September the Plumstead Centre played host to an awards ceremony for sporting athletes who live, work and study in the Royal borough of Greenwich.  The event celebrated athletes who received support from the GLL Sports Foundation, a nationwide programme, which provides financial and training support to established and aspiring sporting talents. 

Among the various VIPs and special guests in attendance on the evening were the Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Leo Fletcher as well as Cllrs Jit Ranabhat, Sandra Thomas and Cathy Dowse. 

In total, 15 Greenwich athletes attended the event in person including Commonwealth Gold Medallist and GSF Ambassador JJ Webb (Fencer), Kent and The Hundred cricketer Phoebe Franklin and Boxer and Sports Aid athlete Sasha Hickey.

 Daryll Neita (GSF Ambassador and Olympic and Commonwealth medallist sprinter) who was away at training camp, sent a video message of support for the GSF.

 Joining Cllr Fletcher were Cllr Jit Ranabhat, Cllr Sandra Thomas and Cllr Cathy Dowse.

 GLL’s CEO Designate Peter Bundey said:

 “The GLL Sport Foundation supports over 3,000 athletes nationally and 45 in the Royal Borough. With most sporting disciplines covered, it remains the UK’s largest independent athlete support programme.

 

“We are indebted to the Council for its ongoing support for the programme.  Its importance is undeniable - helping talented sportsmen and women with practical help to come through the pathway to national and international competition success and inspiring local grassroots community sports.”

 

“I’m exceptionally proud of this year’s cadre who carry the sporting hopes of the Borough on their shoulders.”

 

The Mayor joined Peter Bundey is awarding certificates and a GSF-branded gift bag to the athletes. Athletes JJ Webb and Phoebe Franklin, conducted a Q&A providing some fascinating insights into the life and mentality of an elite athlete, and giving inspiration to the many young athletes in the room.

 

JJ Webb, GB Fencer said: 

 

‘‘It was a pleasure to attend the GLL Sports Foundation Awards Ceremony. Sharing stories and words with up-and-coming talents from the Greenwich area is paramount to the growth of our Borough and is something that I take great pride in.

 “I know first hand how inspiring it is and I hope I was able to do just that. 

“GLL’s support is more than just money - it is family, a place to meet and share our experiences as athletes and ultimately help each other achieve’’.
