Lewisham Leisure Centres get new accreditations

The leisure centres across Lewisham have recently gained new accreditations to help meet the needs of the local community.  

Forest Hill Pool, Glass Mill Leisure Centre and Wavelengths Leisure Centre are now Dementia Friendly accredited centres. This means that our staff have started to complete Dementia Friends training and we have drawn up action plans to make our centres more dementia friendly. Better in Lewisham are also members of the local Dementia Action Alliance to ensure we are kept up to date with the latest training opportunities, it also allows us to work with other organisations across the borough to ensure people with Dementia feel welcome and included within the leisure centres.  

Bellingham Leisure and Lifestyle Centre, Forest Hill Pool, Glass Mill Leisure Centre and Wavelengths Leisure Centre are also now registered as Breastfeeding Friendly Centres with the Breastfeeding Friendly Network. We know our centres are regularly used by mums and families either for swimming lessons, our soft plays or creche so know the importance of being able to breastfeed in a safe and welcoming environment.  

Gaining these accreditations are part of our ongoing commitment to improve access to the leisure centres across the borough for all members of the community. We want to ensure that are centres are welcoming and accessible to all.  

We hope that by gaining these accreditations and continuing to work to improve staff knowledge will further enhance our centre programmes. We have recently reviewed our Older Adults Programme as well as introducing our For the Girls programme at the end of 2023 to ensure as many of the community across the London Borough of Lewisham can access and feel included in the leisure centres. To enable us to create and promote these activities we continue to work with local partners, community groups and organisation across the London Borough of Lewisham.
