What is Pilates?

Pilates – an exercise technique that was created by Joseph Pilates, an athlete and physical trainer, in the early 1900’s as a way for bedridden hospital patients injured during WW1 to keep up their strength. After opening his first Pilates studio near the New York City Ballet, he ended up using his practice to help recover injured ballerinas who needed a way to keep their dancer form. Gaining popularity in the 90’s, Pilates is now used as a low-impact exercise that tones the muscles, builds strength and creates a lean body frame.  It is type of exercise in which you perform a series of controlled movements that flow into one another with precision – uses roughly 50 exercises to work the muscles, enhance endurance, and improve flexibility, posture, balance and even mood. Body weight is the main resistance that is used throughout the series of Pilates exercises. They also become progressively more difficult and complex as you practice over time.  The additional psychological element of Pilates is evident in the additional focus on breathing and concentration during the execution of these exercises. However, most classes based on the original teachings of Joseph Pilates begin with a warmup known as the hundred and move to leg circles and roll-ups.

To quote Joseph Pilates: “In 10 sessions you will feel Better, in 20 you will look Better, and in 30 you will have a whole new body.”  If you are doing 2-3 classes a week, you should start to see results in 10-12 weeks. If you attend one class a week, you will still see results but it might take longer.
