Sutton Day Nursery has been helping the preschool children explore and investigate the Digestive System. 'What happens to our food?', 'Where does it go?', 'Why do we burp?' and 'Why do we go to the toilet?' were just some of the questions asked.

The children decided the best way to learn about our digestive system was to build a model and take the journey of our food for themselves. After collecting a number of cardboard boxes, decorating them and sticking them together, the children had made themselves a 3D digestive system, which consisted of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, large intestine, small intestine and the bottom.

Each child took the journey of their favourite food through the body, climbing through the mouth, down the oesophagus, into the stomach, through the large and small intestine and then exiting through the bottom. Each part of the system was explained and discussed with the children, who continued to ask many more questions such as: 'what does the food do in our stomach?' This then led onto another science experiment in the classroom consisting of wrapping a effervescent vitamin tablet in tissue and putting it in water to see how it separates, dissolves, bubbles, smells and looks inside our ‘stomach’.

The children are continuing to have lots of fun exploring the human body, and we can't wait to post more of our experiments and learning over on our Facebook page.
