On the 1st of June we welcomed new member Colin. He joined us with a goal of getting back out of his wheelchair and walking again having being diagnosed in 2020 with MS (Multiple Sclerosis).

Colin’s attitude and motivation from the moment he came through the door have been inspiring to see. The fitness team have been working with him closely to try and help him on his way to his goal. started off with light work on the exercise bike building up time and resistance. He also started using the resistance equipment and finding great benefits from using the lower body kit to help reconnect the brain and muscles.

Multiple Sclerosis is a lifelong condition that affects the brain and nerves. There are many possible symptoms of MS. Common symptoms include tiredness, problems with vision and difficulty walking and controlling balance. Multiple Sclerosis cannot be cured, but medicines and other treatments can help ease some of the symptoms. The disease is caused by your immune system mistakenly attacking the brain and nerve endings although it is not clear as to why this happens.

We are delighted to be able to say that after just two weeks of working in the gym Colin got up out of his chair and managed to walk on the treadmill. He has since gone on to be able to use the cross-trainer unassisted! It has been remarkable to see the improvement and it all stems from Colin’s positive energy and belief that he could walk again.

We are so happy to see his results and how much it meant to him to get back up and on his feet. You are a true inspiration to all the staff and members here at Mere Green Colin. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
