Celebrate International Women’s Day with us on Friday, 8th March. Across Waltham Forest, we are providing some free spots in our fitness classes in a range of activities. Members can get involved and show their support by booking the listed classes through the app or website. At Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre members are encouraged to bring a friend for the two listed classes.  For women-only squash members will need to email and whilst the court hire is free there is a charge for any equipment hire.

We recommend non-members who identify as female to book via email to Daniel.Bank@GLL.ORG as free places will go on a first-come, first-serve basis.

At Leyton Leisure Centre we have a whole free class which is bookable for non-members via the website, app and through emailing.

If you can we encourage attendees to wear purple the colour of International Women’s Day.

Want to know about the history of International Women’s Day?

One of the first noteworthy steps in the pursuit to help women achieve parity with men worldwide occurred in America in 1908 when the Socialist Party recognised females’ successful strikes over working conditions in the textile industry. The following year a national women’s day was held. This prompted a chain of events across 17 countries as the Socialist International pushed for a joined-up approach to the quest for suffrage and greater equality, leading to the first International Women’s Day.

The campaigns had various successes in countries across the globe over the following decades before the United Nations started celebrating International Women’s Day annually from 8th March 1975.

Each year there is a theme, and 2024’s is #InspireInclusion as women want fairer access to high-level jobs, to be treated the same as men and have the same opportunities.
